The first set of five Leo degrees begins with "A case of apoplexy".
'Apoplexy' is a dated term that used to be a common expression for a stroke. The image of a stroke is still relevant in Leo 1, but it is more a matter of a flow of energy to the head than a concern for critical medical condition.
Think of sun stroke, heat stroke, red-faced,, sun burnt, embarrassed, full of enthusiastic fervour: these are the Leo 1 signals.
Leo 2, "An epidemic of mumps" is a 'sneezer' degree. If there is something that needs to spread, Leo 2 is the vehicle to spread it. The symbol refers to mumps, but this does not have to be a disease manifestation like a cold or a flu. It can be an idea, a mission, a personal energy that is infectious.
Leo 3: "A woman having her hair bobbed" follows a theme that can be traced in the literal suggestions of Leo 1 & 2. If a sudden rise and onset begins as in a case of apoplexy, then spreads like an epidemic, Leo 3 begins the 'bounce back' phase. We could call it convalescence or appreciate it as a pragmatic need to wash, clean and tidy up after a sickness, or to cleanse and disinfect a sick area. In terms of human characteristics, look for a bounce-back capability, a strong independent streak that just rolls up the sleeves to do what is necessary...including the smarts to just leave a situation if it is not working.
Leo 4, "A man formally dressed and a deer with its horns folded" is one of the most twisted and obscure of the whole 360 Sabian symbols. In fact, 'twisted' is a major theme within the symbol. It is a long and winding story to unfold the sense threads ... see my book "The Sabian Symbols in Astrological Analysis" or dig in the archives of this blog for more information...
Leo 5, "Rock formations at the edge of a precipice"... the Geronimo! degree. Leo 5 brings an edge to life experience. Existential themes emerge naturally such as a keen awareness of mortality, of being on an edge while existing, an awareness of how thin and fragile the line is between life and death.
This is not a morbid manifestation. It is keen, razor sharp sensibility and commonly manifests in individuals as an intense anxiety such as vertigo, or as an intense awareness of important life choices where one is ready to leap and shout "Geronimo!"
