What is old becomes new again.
I met a flapper once.. or maybe more than once, since this seems a positive and exquisitely compelling repeating theme in my life.
Somehow I knew that those stylish hats, distinctive style lines of dresses that curve with the jazz rhythms lifting old tunes to meet the slender beauty leaning on the piano, were something special.
The 'flapper' degree is the opposing Leo symbol "An old-fashioned woman and a flapper". Marc Edmund Jones, the creator of the Sabian symbols, choose to change the original symbol to read "An old-fashioned woman and an up-to-date girl".
I see no reason to make that change.
In fact, one can miss the 'flap' and 'flippancy' and fun in this symbol by replacing the word 'flapper'. Stick with the originals... everything one needs to work with the Sabian symbols is there. Know the original sabian symbols... Astrology authors are notorious for writing 'their version' of a Sabian symbol without any attribution.
I am all for playing flippantly with the words as an interpretive means... but please let others know when doing so.
Mystery plays are like old Bible stories that would be performed by traveling bands, often associated with lay 'versions', guild presentations and children's involvement in handing down old stories. It is not necessary to become all-too-serious about the 'mystery' of mystery plays. The idea is to take something old and give it a new look.
