Screeching gulls fight over a scrap of food...
... is not the main motif in 16 Sagittarius. It's tempting, I know, to focus on what gulls are known for. The screeching voracious hunger to swallow down anything that even looks like food. The loud fighting with other gulls. gulls chasing the one with the bread crust dangling from its mouth. And when there is a sudden abundance of scraps, like when a ship discharges its food waste, cacophony catches crescendo.
But this is not necessarily what we find here in Sagittarius 16.
Marc Edmund Jones changed a word in the opposing Gemini 16 symbol. The symbol reads, "A woman suffragist orating". For some reason... perhaps because he could hear the seagulls screeching... he changed the word 'orating' to 'haranguing'. This seems a little extreme to me.
Of course if your own experience of this day's Sabian symbol has heard haranguing screeching gulls in some form or another, let me know. Its not that that theme is impossible... it's just not the main theme.
The symbol is 'Seagulls watching a ship'. Gulls are, thankfully, quiet when watching for something to jump on. Therefore, vigilance, alertness and a capacity to carefully scan for opportunities make up the core motif.
Speaking and listening; watching and being seen; listening and being heard: these are active motifs. if one has something to say, and is waiting for the right time to say it, the listening audience may not be entirely receptive... think of a woman orating about women's suffrage in the days before women were allowed to vote in general elections.
But, regardless of the disposition of the audience, one can get a soap box, so to speak, a platform upon which to speak one's mind. The speaker's goal is to have some influence, to witness her views find a home, a tribe that hears, sees and thinks in a like manner. As the first symbol in the five symbol series, there is energy and gumption to stand up and voice opinions. There is also a better than average chance that others will listen... if not agree. Listening is such that one false step, one minor dropped word, one scrap of contentious information, and the gulls will pounce.
