Thumbs up; thumbs down...
Imagine you have just successfully survived an ordeal by combat in a Roman Forum in front of thousands including the Emperor of Rome upon whose decision your life rests.
The Emperor raises his arm straight out before him, fist clenched with thumb protruding sideways. The crowd hushes waiting for him to turn thumbs up, or thumbs down.
One main theme within this symbol has to do with the power of gestures... little signals that convey much more than ten thousand words.
