Ever achieved some measure of success and public acclaim? Ever had a fine lift in spirits after a few tasty beverages? How about that final period on your tour de force novel?

And then...

The front page one-day wonder fades into obscurity. And then, the effects of liquid courage wear off. And then, the glaring imperfections toss one back into the sea of edits.

My favorite example for this degree is Sir Edmund Hilary. The conqueror of Mount Everest reached the top, then headed back to the bee farm in New Zealand. It was as if he achievement was a one-day front-page wonder, then evaporated until much later another achievement, then another fade, then...
